On Sat., July 25, the New Eyes Collective, in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) will host New Eyes on Greg Tate: Flyboy in the Buttermilk Revisited, a series of live discussions centering Tate’s seminal essay collection, Flyboy in the Buttermilk. First released in 1992, the book explores Blackness at the intersection of gender, politics, sexuality, and pop culture.

With analysis that’s as unsparingly sharp as it is profoundly human, the collection is as relevant now as it was 34 years ago, which is why it received a special rerelease last month via musician and filmmaker Questlove’s publishing imprint Auwa Books.

The update features a new foreword by The Roots’ drummer and a new introduction by award-winning critic and poet Hanif Abdurraquib. In an effort to recontextualize and reconsider the work, members of the New Eyes Collective, a group of Black culture workers across media, will focus on Tate’s literary technique as well as his views on music, film, and other totems of the culture he lived and died for.

“Greg Tate’s writing and insights have redefined the way multiple generations of Black artists, readers, and critics interact with culture,” says New Eyes Collective member Dylan Green, a panelist at the event. “At a time when there’s more art with more connections to the world around us than ever, Flyboy in the Buttermilk is being reintroduced into the zeitgeist at the perfect moment.”

New Eyes Collective on Greg Tate: Flyboy in the Buttermilk Revisited will be interactive and open to the public. As part of the event, a limited amount of free copies of the book will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, MoCADA will have newly reissued copies of Flyboy in the Buttermilk to purchase on site.

New Eyes Collective is a collective of Black cultural workers continuing the Black radical tradition of criticism, journalism, archiving, and collective resource-sharing. Individually, our members have served as journalists, authors, and editors at outlets and institutions including The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Pitchfork, Harper’s BAZAAR, The FADER, and more. We believe Blackness is not a static identity or aesthetic, but a global political condition forged through struggle, displacement, and a racialized global capitalist structure. In a media landscape that continuously pushes Black thought to the margins, we see our work as a necessary intervention. Through education, mentorship, mutual aid, public programming, and archival preservation, we aim to commemorate our forebears, amplify the work of our peers, and make material pathways for those coming after us.

This project is supported by Critical Minded, a grantmaking and learning initiative whose work is focused on resourcing and raising the visibility of critics and writers through direct support to publications and individuals, research, and convening.
