Cue the Record Presents Vinyl Listening Session 034: John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

As part of Coltrane 100, Cue the Record celebrates the centennial of John Coltrane's birth with a listening session centered on John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. Released in 1963 on Impulse! Records, the album brought together Coltrane's tenor saxophone and Johnny Hartman's rich baritone for a collection of intimate jazz standards. By this point in his career, Coltrane had already established himself as one of the most important and adventurous voices in jazz, while Hartman had built a reputation as a distinctive vocalist with a deep connection to the American songbook.

Recorded in a single session in March 1963, the album was an unexpected pairing that became one of Coltrane's most enduring recordings. The music is defined by warmth, restraint, and the remarkable interplay between Hartman's voice and Coltrane's playing. Rather than the intensity and experimentation often associated with Coltrane's work, the record reveals his ability to communicate through subtlety and space, allowing the songs and Hartman's voice to remain at the center.

Coming shortly after Coltrane's landmark A Love Supreme sessions, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman offers another perspective on an artist constantly expanding his musical language. As part of Coltrane 100, this session celebrates not only Coltrane the innovator, but Coltrane the interpreter and collaborator—an artist capable of finding extraordinary depth in some of the most familiar songs in American music.
