Cue the Record Presents Vinyl Listening Session 036: James Brown & the Sound that Shaped Hip-Hop

James Brown stands as one of the most influential figures in the history of American music, transforming the sound of soul and funk while laying the groundwork for generations of hip-hop artists and producers. Known for his commanding stage presence, rhythmic precision, and unmistakable vocal style, Brown developed a sound built around the groove, where rhythm became the driving force of the music.

At the center of Brown’s artistry was his revolutionary approach to rhythm. His emphasis on the downbeat, tight horn arrangements, syncopated bass lines, and interlocking rhythms helped establish funk as a distinct musical language. As hip-hop emerged in the 1970s, these recordings became essential to the development of sampling and beat-making, with producers drawing from Brown’s catalog to create new compositions. His music became a foundation for hip-hop, connecting the innovations of funk to the creative possibilities of the sampler.

Brown is widely recognized as one of the most sampled artists in music history, with his recordings shaping the work of generations of hip-hop producers and artists. His influence extends far beyond sampling, informing the rhythmic sensibilities of R&B, dance music, and popular music more broadly. This listening session traces Brown’s musical legacy and the lasting relationship between his sound and hip-hop, exploring how the grooves he helped create continue to move through the music we hear today.
