Cheat Codes Bio

What do you get when you combine three genre-defiant, dynamic, and dashing mavericks with myriad musical talents who know how to soundtrack and start a party? Well, those wild personalities—KEVI, Trevor Dahl, and Matthew Russell—power Cheat Codes.

Simultaneously trafficking in electronic, pop, hip-hop, and alternative at the same high speed, the Los Angeles trio remain an inescapable force throughout popular culture. As of 2020, their total stream tally eclipses a staggering 6 billion plays. With 4 billion streams on Spotify alone, they average 15 million monthly listeners on the platform, making them one of the “Top 200 Most Listened To Artists in the World.” Maintaining a prolific pace, they’ve steadily amassed a diverse discography, including the platinum Pop Radio Top 5 smash “No Promises” [feat. Demi Lovato], the gold-certified “Feels Great” [feat. Fetty Wap & CVBZ], and gold-selling breakout “SEX” with Kriss Kross Amsterdam. Speaking to their international impact, “Only You” [feat. Little Mix] soared to #1 on Pop Radio in the UK, while they received dozens of platinum certifications in 20 countries. Not to mention, Liam Payne, Kim Petras, and Sofía Reyes all jumped at the chance to collaborate and remixes for Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. Igniting clubs worldwide, their 2019 level 2 EP yielded the #1 Dance Radio hit “Who’s Got Your Love” [feat. Daniel Blume] in addition to “Ferrari” [feat. Afrojack] and “Be The One” [feat. Kaskade]. Acclaimed by Rolling Stone, Paper, Time, Billboard, and more, the musicians have shut down The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! with stunning and show-stopping performances. Amidst all of the accolades and adventures throughout an unbelievable six years, the three-piece have yet to summit one particular peak... “We’ve been wanting to make a full-length album ever since we started,” exclaims Trevor. “Over the last six years, we’ve definitely become known for switching up our sound. One minute, we’ve got a record with Demi Lovato. The next, we’ve got a record with Fetty Wap. It’s something we like to do. We’re applying the approach to a full body of work you can listen to from beginning to end.” “For as much as everybody always asks, ‘When are you going to make an album?’, we asked ourselves that question even more,” admits Matthew. “It feels like 2020 is the right time.” In typical Cheat Codes fashion, they flipped the script on the creative process once again. This time around, the boys wrote ideas separately before bringing them to the table. KEVI recorded more vocals and rhymes under his rap alter ego Prince$$ Rosie, adding a darker hip-hop edge. Matthew contributed more guitar, building on the cohesion. Meanwhile, Trevor’s production served as the glue between these elements. “All of our personalities are shining through,” exclaims Trevor. “We did a lot of writing by ourselves, so you can get a sense of each of individual when you listen to the songs. There are more vocals. We started with around forty ideas and whittled those down to 15 with a vibe and a feel. We focused on releasing one song at a time for a while. Now, we want people to get the full picture and know us for who we are.” “Thematically, it’s darker and more descriptive,” adds Matthew. “We love dance music, but this goes beyond those sick drops. It’s a combination of all the styles we’ve done in the past. Trevor started out doing an acoustic project. I was in a hip-hop group. KEVI is a rapper. The album is where we meet in the middle. We’ve discovered what makes us unique. It’s a representation of Cheat Codes as artists.” They put that artistry on full display on 2020’s “No Service In The Hills” [feat. Trippie Redd, blackbear, & PRINCE$$ ROSIE]. Threaded together by grunge-style six-string transmissions, KEVI’s nimble raps detail the all too real struggle of replying to someone from the reception vortex of the Hollywood Hills. Right out of the gate, Hypebeast described it as “laced with ghoulish guitar licks, crisp drums and airy synths as melodic autotune vocals from blackbear and Trippie Redd glide smoothly over the lush instrumentals. ” M eanwhile, Earmilk c laimed, “Cheat Codes are ready to reintroduce themselves with a moodier and deeper new sound.” The sound expands yet again on the single “Heaven.” Co-written by Bastille frontman Dan Smith, the track flutters from iridescent verses towards a glowing refrain, “When I’m lying in this bed with you, I’m in heaven. ” T he evocative production hinges on a mid-tempo groove, highlighting glorious notes. “‘Heaven’ immediately gives you a visual,” explains Matthew. “You could practically see these bright heavenly gates opening.” “It feels familiar, but it’s a whole new vibe,” states Trevor. “We feel like it’s the perfect Cheat Codes song.” As always, Cheat Codes keep everyone guessing on the album and beyond. “It’s been a wild ride,” grins Kevi. “We had these big dreams. A couple of years later, we were doing what we set out to do. We just want to take over and make it bigger and bigger every year.” “A big point for is to make sure we never get bored,” concludes Trevor. “That’s why we started Cheat Codes. Being able to switch it up musically and live, it’s always fun. We’ll never get tired of it.”
