An innovative show fusing Afro-Brazilian rhythms with American Funk, Soul, Dub and a dash of Psychedelia with a unique live-composing form used to conduct improvisation.

Primes debut album “Exótico Americano" is a soulful musical journey through the Americas. Afro-Brazilian rhythms act as the album’s beating heart and give life to the psychedelic, funk, cumbia, reggae and soul sounds infused throughout the record. The project shares the group’s observations of living through North and South America and tells of a personal yet universal story. The richness of the multicultural experiences both in Austin and around the world have informed the life and art of Frederico7 y Los Primes and make it easy for them to transition from a samba song in the album to a cumbia.

“We’re all exótico Americanos,” they say. “We all have stories that are complex and that could probably make a good movie. Each one of our stories has power.”

The live-composed improvisations, conducted by Andrea Ariel, will be drawn from these songs, deconstructing and remixing them in the moment. Imagine exhilarating overtures to songs created in the moment that drop into the full song performances. Live composing adds mystery, increases anticipation and elevates excitement in performances in many different contexts. It can also engage occasional audience participation.

This conducted improvisation technique is called Soundpainting, and was created in the ’70s by jazz musician Walter Thompson. Soundpainting uses over 1500 gestures to spontaneously guide, shape and remix material in real time. Now practiced widely across Europe in both professional and educational circles, Andrea Ariel is the only artist in this region working with this form. She has worked with Thompson since 1998 and was an instrumental part of its development as a multidisciplinary form at Think Tanks in Woodstock, NY from 1999-2005. With her company, Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre, she has produced over 10 productions that included Soundpainting.

About Andrea Ariel (Producer & Soundpainter)

Andrea Ariel is the Artistic Director of Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre, based in Austin, TX where she produces, choreographs, and performs works that are created in collaboration with artists working in dance, music, theater, poetry, film, media and visual art. Ariel has created over 50 original works since first forming the company in 1990 and has been presented in Texas, California, South Carolina, Illinois, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, New York and in Europe. Honors for her work include special citations from the Austin Critics Table, The Sound and Vision Award for accomplishments in the realm of dance and a commitment to visionary cross-discipline work, and the Site for Sore Eyes and Ears Award for invigorating collaborations of dance and music in site-specific performance. Other recognitions include twelve nominations and four awards for LUMEN (2016), HEART (2014) and The Bowie Project: A Rock and Roll Soundpainting (2014, 2015, 2017), also named #2 of the Top Nine Big Bang Dance Concerts of 2015. As a Certified Multidisciplinary Soundpainter & Educator Andrea is well respected for her innovations with this revolutionary and boundary breaking form of live composition used in multidisciplinary improvised performances. Her commitment to the art form, infusing it with new dimensions and possibilities, is evident in her ongoing engagement that has included performances in Austin (The Bowie Project, Locked-In, Rally) and with collaborators in New York and San Francisco East Bay. She regularly participates in the yearly International Soundpainting ThinkTanks in Europe, and was chosen to represent the City of Austin in Spain and Italy as a Creative Ambassador for Dance in 2014 and 2019.

About Frederico7:

Born and raised in Brazil, Frederico7 has also lived in Mexico and Argentina prior to setting roots in the "Live Music Capital of the World" Austin, Texas. His bands have been a constant presence amongst the best worldbeat groups from Austin (5X @ the ‘Best of Austin Chronicle Poll). He is an ambassador of Pan American Soul music who has performed with artists such as Grupo Fantasma, Jair de Oliveira, Los Amigos Invisibles, Lee Scratch Perry, Cafe Tacvba, Damian Marley and many others. Festival appearances include SXSW, Austin City Limits (ACL), Houston International Fest, Saturnalia Festival & tours in Colombia, Mexico and the USA.
